Water and food
Summer is the worst time to ride the desert, so avoid it. The rest of the year, plan about a litre of water per hour of desert riding, and eat something small every 45 minutes, before you feel hungry.

Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back, and save the emergency numbers on your phone before you lose signal.

Route files
Load the GPX file onto your device at home and check the direction. A reversed route is one of the most common mistakes.
