Sluggers 400

A 400 km ultra-endurance journey that starts in the wild Gaza-envelope landscapes, crosses the green hills of Lachish and climbs into the Jerusalem hills, and ends with a night sprint to the Tel Aviv lighthouse. You decide: ride as a "snail" with your home on your back, or as a commando "slug" non-stop.

From the field: how the route feels

When you build a route on the computer, you try to imagine how it will feel: the conditions, what riders will feel when they reach each section, what they have behind them and what is still ahead. Then you ride it, and everything feels like it is on steroids.

Most of the route is very rewarding, with a real sense of progress across changing terrain, just the right amount of singletrack, plenty of points of interest and varied views.

Not a walk in the park

Take this route seriously: train, come fit, and bring a bike in good working order.

Whoever rides it will not regret it: an intense, distilled experience in a single weekend, with a huge sense of achievement at the end.

The route, section by section

Just standing on the start line takes courage. It will not be easy, but it is very rewarding: give yourself to the experience and put the screens away. Here is the route section by section, with notes from the route designer.

Full route story (PDF, Hebrew)
  1. 1 Ashkelon → Be’eri Details

Dirt roads (a little sandy at the end of summer, but rideable), paved bike paths and some singletrack.

    Water

    Plenty of water points.

    Food

Almost no food on the route, and detouring into villages costs time. Bring enough food for the first day, until evening.

    Heads up

You start in the hot hours. The excitement pushes you to go hard: don’t burn yourself out early.

  2. 2 Be’eri → Ofakim Details

Be’eri singletrack, then Nahal HaBesor on the scenic road (not the singletrack). Fairly flowing, with some end-of-summer powder: easy gear, weight back, take it slow. From Urim a fast stretch: 3 km of dirt road, then a paved bike path to Ofakim.

    Food

Urim: fuel station and Aroma, the first big resupply. Ofakim has everything: burgers, pizza, shawarma, fuel stations. Eat and restock.

  3. 3 Ofakim → Beit Kama The most “boring” section Details

Short singletrack and dirt road to Gilat, then a farm-road stretch. Some powder here and there, but mostly fast and flowing.

    Water

At the back entrance to Gilat there is a playground with a hidden tap behind the shelter.

    Food

Beit Kama has everything: fuel station, Aroma, McDonald’s, tortillas, burekas. Riding on through the night? Carry food to Jerusalem: there is nowhere to buy until morning.

  4. 4 Beit Kama → Netiv HaLamed-Heh The most epic section Details

Farmland hills that turn rocky, with more mountainous climbs. You cross the stunning Nahal Adorayim, and on Ma’ale Hagit there are two walls best walked. Then a firing zone (Lachish) and nature reserve, a wide dirt road to Route 35, and at km 195 a wild road descent and fast run to Netiv HaLamed-Heh. Only ride into the village if you need supplies.

    Water

Don’t count on taps here. Drink plenty before and carry at least 3 litres, more if you can. The orchard by Route 3415 may have a working tap; don’t rely on it.

    Heads up

Km 169.5: after the cattle gate on the hilltop comes a technical, loose and dangerous descent. If in doubt, walk it. Another cattle gate at the bottom: don’t build up speed. Right after it the route crosses about 30 m of field. That is not a mistake.

  5. 5 Netiv HaLamed-Heh → central Jerusalem Half-route finish Details

A long climb to Bar Bahar, mostly comfortable with a few steep walls. Then Ein Kobi, a long descent, a long climb and the Shelf singletrack to Ein Lavan, a spring to cool off in (you will rarely be alone). On past the zoo, over the railway bridge and up an easy bike path into town. Alleys and a small park in Yemin Moshe, then the Old City: ride slowly and take it in. The half route ends at the I❤JLM sign. Photo with your bike overhead, you earned it.

    Water

Trail tap at km 208, and a tap at Ein Kobi.

    Food

No café at Bar Bahar for now. Maybe a coffee cart in the morning; don’t count on it.

    Heads up

Keeping Shabbat and need a train by midday? Starting the climb after 08:00 is risky. Check your last train; if it’s tight, ride from Netiv HaLamed-Heh to Beit Shemesh and take the train there. There is roadwork on the Jerusalem bike path; the file is up to date.

  6. 6 Central Jerusalem → Modi’in Details

A fast descent on a paved path past the Beit Zayit reservoir, a short road section, then a fairly tough climb to Tzuba: walk it and save energy. Ein Rafa singletrack downhill with many switchbacks, a climb to Ma’ale HaHamisha, a crazy descent to Nataf, a moderate climb to Har Ozer and another crazy descent. Amazing views. Then a short singletrack in Canada Park, and farm roads and paved paths into central Modi’in.

    Water

Cooler by the sports field in Tzuba, and a tap at the roundabout at the entrance to Nataf.

    Food

Plenty of food on Jaffa Street; Mordechai HaBukhari for pastries (meat and vegetarian). After Shabbat begins: Ein Rafa, Ein Naqquba or the entrance to Abu Ghosh. Modi’in has everything, plus the Ligad fuel station at km 318.

    Heads up

Two very fast, dangerous descents on Har Ozer: take care. After Shabbat begins the Beit Nekofa gate may be locked: a phone number and an alternative file are pinned in the group. Careful on the short road section near Beit Zayit.

  7. 7 Modi’in → Shoham industrial zone Details

A great trail along Nahal Anava, a bike path to Ligad, then Ben Shemen forest: fast trails and some blue and green singletrack, mostly downhill but technical. Then dirt roads and hills to the Shoham industrial zone.

    Food

The fuel station in the Shoham industrial zone is more or less the last resupply before the Tel Aviv finish.

    Heads up

You will be tired by Ben Shemen. Take care on the singletrack.

  8. 8 Shoham → Tel Afek Will surprise even the locals Details

Rolling hills to Camp Nachshonim, a fast paved descent, a flowing climb on a wide track to El’ad and a flight down to the quarry. A cool, safe crossing of Nahal Shiloh, then under Route 444 into Migdal Tsedek park: a paved path among ruins with the tower above you. Near the top, a sharp right onto a promenade with views over the hills, a long shaded descent through Rosh HaAyin forest to a coffee cart, then along Nahal Raba, under Route 6 and on to the Yarkon.

    Water

Tap at the playground at the entrance to the Rosh HaAyin neighbourhood.

    Food

Coffee cart in Rosh HaAyin forest.

    Heads up

The bike path to El’ad has people who don’t know how to share it. After the road crossing in Rosh HaAyin forest, don’t miss the easy-to-miss bike path. Stick to the file through Rosh HaAyin.

  9. 9 Tel Afek → Tel Aviv lighthouse The finish Details

Fast trails and the eastern Yarkon singletrack, then the paved Yarkon path and a sprint to the lighthouse. A photo with your bike overhead and the sea behind you is a must, and if you live nearby, invite the family to the finish line.

    Food

The Lighthouse café is right at the finish, and Tel Aviv has anything you could want to eat.

    Heads up

Stick to the file. Two water crossings: one small, and one where you hop across big rocks with the bike in your hands. There is also a bridge marked closed; use it at your own risk.
